I love five year olds. In fact five might just be my favorite age. It seems to be when a child realizes that she is really and truly a being separate from her family. And its when we begin to allow her/him a little more freedom to realize his/her own self. Steve used to say when he was small: when I become a person...
Zoe is five. She lost her first tooth about a week ago. I wasn't prepared for it. Mentally or otherwise. Her brother lost his first tooth well after his sixth birthday. She seems to be keeping up with him a little too well. And then there was the tooth fairy issue. The tooth fairy brings only one loonie in our house, assuming she can find a loonie. Shouldn't this be in some sort of parent manual. Oh wait, I gave up reading parenting books long ago, found them too contrary and too "just not right" for our family. Often I ended up feeling guilty for doing something wrong until I slowly began to realize that with a little common sense its pretty hard to do much wrong. After all we are the ones who love them the most.
But back to Zoe. Yesterday during lunch she announced that she and Drew had decided to just live together instead of getting married. One can only begin to imagine what is going through my head. WHATTTT?? Why is my five year old thinking about marriage or not marriage for that matter. Isn't that a little beyond her reach. Shouldn't she be thinking about what she's going to play at recess and how much she can annoy her brother on the bus? And then there is Drew. A nice young man. Also five years old. With two parents who happen to be Respiratory Therapists. And suddenly my whole career flashes before my eyes....Respiratory Therapy is a VERY small community. If it gets out that Zoe thinks Drew is not good enough to marry. Alright now I'm being a bit ridiculous but its the only way for me to give one a clue as to what happens in my head pretty much instantaneously when my daughter announces that she and Drew are only going to live together.
Pardon me? What was that Zoe? I feign indifference just a little. She announces again that she and Drew have decided not to get married. Because they don't like kissing and stuff. But they want to live in the same house and decorate it like Scooby-Doo and get a van that they will call the Mystery Machine and even paint like the mystery machine. And they will solve mysteries together. And they will get a dog that can talk and likes Scooby Snacks.
Whew.
You mean like roommates? I ask.
Yes, roommates, she says and now she knows a new word that she uses when she describes her grown up living situation to her dad.
Safe for a few more days. She's not a teenager yet.
