I wandered out to the back forty. We're building a tree house for our children between our two Manitoba Maples. Steve had reached the stage where he needed to make the occasional cut and I wanted to check in on safety and to let him know that dinner was nearly ready.
"Can you tell me what that noise is?" he asked, turning off the saw.
I followed the incessant sound up the branch of one of the maples and I was astonished to discover a red crowned wood pecker working away in it's rhythmic pattern at our tree. Of course, by the time I brought out the camera he had found what he was looking for and had moved on.
It doesn't matter that I didn't capture the image. Life is beautiful.
