a little list of gratitude

Tomorrow I go back to work. Granted, I don't work a lot. Less than 20 hours per week. But still it will interfere with the life of leisure that I have been living until this moment. So I thought I'd put together a little list of gratitude. Cheery in nature, unlike so many of my previous posts.

1. Family vacation. We just returned from one of the most relaxing family vacations ever. Our "big kids" at 7,6,and 4 have learned to entertain themselves and each other with only a little direction (or interference) from the grown ups. Mainly just basic suggestions for the next activity. We got to see my brother,Chris and his girlfriend, Jen in their Lethbridge home.
And we met their dog Olly, whom Ruby befriended by feeding him the bits off her tray that she didn't want.
We got to see my sister, Heather and her husband, Sean who are expecting their first baby in December (this is the BEST NEWS EVER from one of my previous posts). They have purchased a vacation home in the interior of BC, which when finished will be absolutely beautiful.
We got to see Jeff and Jasmine in their new house in Panorama and Jeff gave us a tour of the new fire hall there.

How thrilling!

2. Birthday Parties. Before we left on my birthday for our vacation we had a backyard barbecue birthday party. About half way through the evening Zoe said to me: "you have the BEST birthday parties ever" and she might just be right.

Summery, warm, wading pool and water guns, swing sets and cupcakes, a glass of red wine, the people I love. Blissful. And then to end our vacation we had a little party for Ruby in Calgary at Edworthy Park.

First birthdays are best when grandparents are able to come too!

3. Front steps. Which I now have!! And the flower pots that I put on them. OK so they are just annuals and I'll have to pot new ones next year. But gosh, they make me happy.

4. Aidan, Zoe, Avery and Ruby. Check out number one. And their boundless energy and enthusiasm for adventures (especially when the adventure includes the Secret Forest, swimming pools, hot springs, beaches, fishing rods and fire halls) And Ruby mostly sleeps through the night!!!

5. Steve. Who looks like an actual mountain man with his week old beard. I keep having to look twice since he is usually clean shaven for work. And even though he spent two hours drinking beer in my brother's hot tub on my birthday while I did all the work putting the kids to bed, I am still grateful for him.

6. Brunch. Birthday brunches are nice, but I am also fond of book club brunches and just brunch in general. It might be something to do with my love of breakfast food or it could be the general laziness of it all.

7. Nieces and/or nephews. See number two again. But also, James and Sarah had a baby girl, Audrey Sophia on May 26. We've been lucky to see her now, three times, since she lives in Calgary and we are here.
I think she gets cuter every time we see her too. And Shannon and Brett welcomed Thomas John on May 27. Even though I haven't actually seen him, I am still happy he is here and happy that he is with people who love him the most. And it makes me happy that my children have cousins. What joy I have had in my relationships with some of my cousins, I can only hope the same for them.

8. Walks in the ravine. We live in one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in Edmonton. Full of trees which overhang the streets and close to the Millcreek Ravine, where I spend hours walking, pretending that I don't live in the city. It's so beautiful, I don't even mind the mosquitoes.

9. Summer rain. The after rain scents. The tucked in feeling of being inside while its pouring outside.

10. Chocolate. Need I elaborate?
